I’ll show you how to use remotely control your computer for free. I know you can use VNC and I love that program, but you need to open two ports on your firewall if you try to access it from outside the network. Also if you only have one ip address for the internet it will only work on one computer. However at my house I have two servers with 10 virtual machines in them. However, I can take control of each of them individually with no poking holes in my firewall. How did I do it? I did it with logmein.com, for those of you who don’t know what it is, it’s bascially a site that allows you to take remote control of your computer for free anywhere there’s an internet connection. I’ve described the installation process below.

Installation Procedure

1. Go to www.logmein.com and create an account.

2. Now login to you logmein.com account.

3. At the top right hand corner click on add computer.

4. Choose the logmein free version.

5. Download and install the client.

6. Now go to another computer, and log into the logmein.com site, and remotely control your computer. That’s it.

No poking holes through firewalls, or complicated configurations. The beauty of logmein is that you can load the client on as many computers as you want under the same account with no cost. So you can load the client on your dad’s, or mom’s computer for free, and when they need computer help just log into the website and take control of their computer. Logmein has a file transfer, and remote printing capabilities also, but it costs $12.95 per computer a month for those capabilities.
